"This quilt square commemorates Jose Couso, a Spanish television cameraman killed by U.S. missile fire on 8 April, 2003 as he was filming the war from his 14th floor hotel room. The U.S. military justified its attack on the hotel where many foreign journalists stayed as 'an unfortunate accident of war,' claiming U.S. troops were responding to sniper fire. José Couso was 37 years old, married, with a young child. Since his death, his brothers worked with the Spanish anti-war movement filing suits against Aznar's government seeking to have Spain's participation in the war declared illegal. After the horrific attack on Madrid on 11 March, 2004, the Aznar government was voted out of office and replaced with a socialist prime minister who pledged to withdraw all Spanish troops from Iraq. Por la Paz," Jane, Brooklyn, NY.
